a few days later at the inquest:
our first witness is
dr. mark hoppe.
the cause of death was
a puncture wound
to mr. ostend's brain.
The police technician:
as you see, there is a spike hidden in the back
of the chair. sitting on the cushion activates
a mechanism which thrusts the spike up and out.
there is a small rod which blocks the spike--
analogous to the safety on a gun--but it
was broken. analysis of the metal showed
it had been broken for years...
an expert on renaissance art:
the chair is a typical seventeenth
century style found in Iberia,
based on Italian styles of
the early renaissance. this
particular chair may be one
known to have been built
to assassinate the duke of
lugo--which of course was
uncovered and the con-
spirators were turned over
to the grand inquisitor--
this chair is known to have
passed into the possession
of king fernando VI about 1750,

after hearing the evidence,
it is the judgment of the inquest that philip ostend died as
a result of misadventure.
the inquest is adjourned.
Hi, charity!
y'know, I just
don't get it.
don't get what?
we've got neda, davis, a weapon, a victim--
and no murder!
municipal building
"do not look a happy
ending in the mouth."
well, happy
for everybody
but ostend.
although it is possible
that someone knew
the chair existed--
and maneuvered ostend
into buying it, knowing
it would kill him!
come on, girls.
that's pretty far-fetched!
the end

You, sir, should have been a film director. What a great story! What great visuals! What fascinating characters! I'm always delighted to see how these stories end, and sad that they're over. I hope you still have a hundred left to write!

Your stories (and panel 4, specifically) have verisimilitude, which is more important that factual accuracy. Brilliant storytelling! Catherwood is my new hero.

You weave an incredible tale here! I'd so love to see this filmed with the proper integrity for the time period!

There's usually a good bit of research involved in these strips, but in this case I just made up that stuff in the fourth panel.
