It's one of those age old basement arguments...like who'd win in a fight, 'the Hulk or Superman'. No real point, but man, do we get passionate about it.
In the 70's, they WERE a metal band. Over time as their sound was imitated by many other, smoother more radio-friendly bands, and as heavy metal music evolved and became rougher, more agressive, Rush has been lumped into the classic rock category. Ignore Getty Lee's voice and just listen to the music--the guitarist on the classic Rush stuff rivals Tony Iommi at his greatest. But Rush has no balls--if they did, Getty Lee wouldn't be able to get his voice that high.
