But you can't stop nature in her fury, and you can't turn back the clock. You can only muscle up and plow through it. And it helps, on the way, to laugh when you can, wonder at the beauty nature leaves in her wake (b%tch better leave some form of compensation), and pull closer to those you love. It's a survivors mentality, most people who've gone through trauma do some form of it. Every death means something, but every LIFE means something too. Concentrate on those instead, and on yours. It doesn't feel like it now, but you are one of the lucky ones.
Like the now 534 dead in Brazil, and rising. You have a strong support network, even from people you don't normally speak to, Connor, if you'd stop making them feel bad and pushing them away. There are people fighting for, rooting for, and praying for Australia that you've probably never even spoken to. The world, and BS, is not set against you, so please stop acting like it is. I am sorry, VERY sorry you went through what you did. I've been there. I've been huddled in a boarded up traler in winds high enough to rip it off it's foundations, praying to live until morning. It's never fun.
No, I am saying, in a nutshell, stop lashing out at your friends and remember your blessings. We lost 2752 people when the trade towers collapsed, and we're losing more from diseases they contracted when they went in to help. 1836 were taken by Hurricane Katrina, many children. My grandfather lost in sight in 1992 because we were caught in a freak blizzard and couldn't get medical help. Your family is safe, you are healthy and alive, and you have friends here who love and support you. You also have friends facing crisises that might just overshadow your own three day journey into hell.
And you make it sound like the death of 16 people. (a few of them younger than myself) is absolutely NOTHING. Like: "Oh, so 16 people died, who gives a crap".
My friends call me 'Conner'. You're not a friend. And you don't need to tell me I've been lucky,I feel bad enough about it already, you don't need to make me feel any worse.
And, by the way, before you continue to rant about how awful it is that (at last count) around 16 people are dead and about 65 missing and presumed dead, maybe you and Gentry both should go talk to Marcelo. He lost 350 of his countrymen to floods today. You guys in Australia are not having fun, I know, but do try to remember how VERY lucky you are. It could have been worse.
...or outlining the extent of the problem. Make a strip telling us your story during the flood, or honoring some of the brave rescuers and helpers. Stop hitting people on the head with a mallet, and instead direct our attention where you wish it would go. Because right now I can tell you, whatever message you are trying to get across is not getting through. People run from from guilt as hard as they do horror, and they take refuge in--you guessed it--laughter. Or apathy. Or denial.
So what you're saying is we should beat our breasts, cake our faces in ash, and sob until we curl fetal, Connor? Or are you saying no one should talk about it at all, just a world-wide pall of silence? O r maybe people should do what they always do and just cease to notice or care--it's your problem, so you deal with it--that attitude. You and Gentry are very quick to tell people what they shouldn't do, but I have yet to see either of you say what folk SHOULD. Rather than being the voice of "Don't," why not be the voice of "Do?" Make a strip telling us about charities we can donate to...
We do not laugh AT those in tragedy, we laugh in order to HANDLE tragedy; because our only other choice is to cry until despair takes us. No one is trying to be callous--I have been glued to the story since it first emerged, and I am, right now, contacting a charity I know of to see if they can help. We just need to keep moving forward, and sometimes the best, the ONLY way to do that is to laugh.
In which case, I have to apologize that you are surrounded by Americans, Gentry, because we laugh. The towers had barely fallen before jokers were already making the rounds. Black humor, to be sure, but humor nonetheless. We have a country constantly beset by natural disasters, including flooding, tornados, blizzards, earthquakes, and hurricanes. In many cases, these disasters are annual events. I myself have lived through 13 solid years of hurricanes, often complete with flooding.
Yes. Who couldn't laugh at Brisbane being infected with raw sewage due to the flooded sewers? Who couldn't laugh at the tales of those who survived? Who couldn't have laughed at those who have died? Who can't laugh at over 90 people still presumed missing? Who couldn't have laughed as those people who watched as their homes were flooded? Who can't laugh at over 5300 people are still stuck in a blackout? Because PK and I certainly can't laugh. As far as I know PK is still stuck in the blackout like most of my family and friends.
And yet, some of the people laughing even in these comments ARE Australian. Humor is one way some handle grief, uncertainty, or pain. If there is one thing life has taught me, it's don't take away the solace of others, simply because it doesn't work for you personally.

''Humor is the best way to deal with it''. Yeah, tell that to the parent's of the kids who drowned.

I agree with Genty, the misery of my own people isn't something I can laugh at.

Again, it's funny because they have started evacuating most of Brisbane and tons of people are now homeless.

It's also funny because it's caused billions of dollars in damage.

It's funny because 9 people have been killed and 66 people presumed missing. Tee-hee.
