because if you touch the ark you die, its written in the bible.
so the nazi's won't be able to touch it.

This movie takes place in 1936, a time when no one cared about the Nazi's, so Indiana wouldn't be fighting them, if it was 1943, then yes he would fight them. And if my knowledge of the bible is correct whoever touches the ark, dies! SO Indy would have died and so would the Nazi's but Spielberg changed it for dramatic and entertainment reasons.
